Saugerties Stallions Erupt in Fifth to Defeat Oneonta Outlaws, 10-4
SAUGERTIES, N.Y. — The Saugerties Stallions used a six-run fifth inning and a balanced offensive attack to pull away from the Oneonta Outlaws, earning a 10-4 victory on Monday night at Cantine Field in PGCBL action.
The win was powered by timely hitting throughout the lineup, highlighted by Magnus Krieger’s three-hit, three-run performance and a pair of RBIs each from Cooper Schmidt and Michael Hanna. Saugerties broke a 1-1 tie with a decisive rally in the fifth and never looked back, with the bullpen holding off a late Oneonta surge.
Decisive Fifth Inning Turns the Tide
After both teams traded single runs in the third inning—Oneonta striking first on a hit-by-pitch RBI from Matthew Mayer and Saugerties answering with an RBI single by Michael Lebenson—the Stallions’ offense came alive in the bottom of the fifth.
Magnus Krieger started the rally with a single, and after a walk and another single loaded the bases, Cooper Schmidt delivered an RBI single to center to put Saugerties ahead 2-1. A wild pitch brought in Aiden Schmidt for a 3-1 lead, and Michael Hanna followed with a two-run single to center, extending the margin to 5-1. Steven Ramirez then singled to right center, advancing to second on an error and driving in Hanna, before Danny Suroweic capped the inning with an RBI single to center, making it 6-1.
Stallions Add Insurance in the Eighth
Saugerties tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach. Drew Freeman drew a walk and scored on a triple by Magnus Krieger. Aiden Schmidt then doubled to left center to plate Krieger, and Cooper Schmidt’s infield single brought home Aiden Schmidt, pushing the lead to 9-1.
Oneonta’s Late Rally Falls Short
The Outlaws mounted a rally in the top of the ninth, stringing together four hits and a fielder’s choice to score three runs. Nolan Stark doubled home Colton Penner, Blake Fortunato singled to bring in PJ Strand, and Daniel Tome III’s fielder’s choice plated Stark, cutting the deficit to 10-4. However, Saugerties reliever Ryder Herchenroder induced a groundout to end the game.
Offensive Leaders Shine for Saugerties
Magnus Krieger led the Stallions’ 13-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a triple, and an RBI. Aiden Schmidt finished 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI double. Cooper Schmidt contributed two hits, two RBIs, and scored once, while Michael Hanna drove in two with a key single during the fifth-inning outburst. Michael Lebenson reached base three times, collecting a hit, two walks, an RBI, and scoring once.
Every spot in the Stallions’ lineup contributed, with eight different players recording at least one hit.
Strong Bullpen Work Secures the Win
Saugerties used seven pitchers to navigate the contest, with Carson Lietz setting the tone by tossing two scoreless innings to open the game. Matt Murtagh and Jace VanValkenburg combined for three shutout innings in the middle frames, while Brendan Rusnack and Jake O’Connor each delivered scoreless outings to keep Oneonta in check. Ryder Herchenroder weathered the ninth-inning rally to close out the victory.
For Oneonta, starter Braeden McNamee held Saugerties to one run through four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. The Outlaws’ bullpen struggled to contain the Stallions’ offense, yielding five runs over the final four innings.
Outlaws’ Offense Shows Life Late
Nolan Stark paced the Outlaws with two hits, a run scored, and an RBI double in the ninth. PJ Strand went 2-for-4 with a run, and Daniel Tome III contributed a hit, a run, and an RBI. Oneonta finished with 10 hits but left several runners on base and could not overcome the big fifth inning by Saugerties.
Game Summary
The Stallions’ ability to capitalize with runners on base and a shutdown effort from the bullpen proved decisive. Saugerties improved their standing with a convincing win at home, while Oneonta’s late push was not enough to close the gap.
