History
The Cantine Veterans Memorial Complex is a 127-acre sports and recreation complex owned and operated by the Town of Saugerties under the Department of Parks, Recreation & Buildings.
In the late 1800s it was known as the Town Driving Park and owned by the Cantine family, who allowed the use of their property for recreational purposes. In the 1930s, the W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration) built an elevated grandstand for spectator seating, and the combination baseball and football field was completed late in 1937 — it remains the Complex's main baseball field today, Cantine Field #11.
On May 8, 1938, Martin Cantine donated 31 acres to the Town of Saugerties, and the field was renamed Cantine Field in his honor.
In the early 1970s, the Knaust Estate donated 39 adjacent acres to the Town in honor and memory of Saugerties veterans of all military branches, becoming the Veterans Memorial portion of the complex. Mid-1970s grants secured through the efforts of the late Jack Keeley — two separate $99,000 grants — funded six additional ball fields, including two lighted fields, plus a large pavilion and recreation center.
In 1990-91, the Town purchased 67 additional acres to the north of the complex. In 1998, the Kiwanis Club of Saugerties funded an Olympic-size refrigerated ice rink, later donated to the Town in 1999.
Community donations and contributions since the beginning total over $300,000, with user fee revenues totaling over $750,000.
